Electronic Overfill Prevention System

Opus is used in conjunction with Midas; now not only does Midas protect from misfuelling but also from overfilling the fuel storage tanks, eliminating the need for any mechanical overfill valves within the tank

Opus is fitted to the top of the tank lid and its probe sensor initiates closure of the Midas inlet valve once the fuel tank is nearing an overfill.

Technical Details

Opus is an electronic overfill prevention system located on the tank lid which is hard wired through an intrinsically safe circuit to the Midas system at the tanker filling point.

The primary function of the Midas system is to prevent tanker misfuels, also to control filling and eliminate storage tank overfills. The Opus probe is installed on the tank lid with the probe section sitting “inside” the tank space at a length that gives the client their preferred safe working capacity level. Once the fuel level in the tank reaches this safe working level a magnetic float system triggers a signal to the Midas at the tanker filling position activating a series of pre-programmed visual and audible alarms to alert the tanker driver to the impending overfill situation. The factory default alarm condition closes the internal butterfly valve by 90% for 20 seconds whilst alarming audibly and flashing a unique sequence of led lights to alert the driver to the imminent full closure. Once the 20 second alarm phase is completed the Midas system logs the time and date of the alarm for full traceability. If the driver has not had time to shut the tanker valve and drain his hose before full closure he can use the standard Operators key fob to re-activate the Midas; the result will be that the unit will drop immediately into the 20 second alarm loop. Opus effectively removes the need for mechanical overfill prevention systems thereby avoiding health and safety issues such as engineers working in confined spaces or having to deal with dangerous vapour releases and fuel spillages.

Best practice in line with EN: 13616 “overfill prevention devices for static tanks for liquid petroleum“ recommends that overfill prevention systems should be fully testable and that an annual inspection is performed to confirm functionality. The design of the Opus is such that it can be tested without removal and zero vapour release into the tank chamber. All that is required of the engineer is to remove the Opus cover and manually lift the float system to the high level position. This simple action will produce a visual indicator to the engineer in the tank chamber as well as an audible and visual indicator at the filling point through theMidas system.
